b61-424 MODERN MAKER. Karl Holtey No. 982 Smoothing Plane. The No. 98 series were Holtey's first planes designed from scratch rather than copies of any older design. The No. 982 was the second design in the series, with a 10" rolled iron body, extra heavy for stability, assembled with screws and taper pins rather than dovetails, a bevel-down 2-1/8" iron, and rosewood tote and knob. The No. 98 series was described by planemaker Konrad Sauer as Holtey's most significant contribution to modern planemaking, and by Chris Schwarz simply as "a revelation." A couple of minor dings, but overall a thing of beauty that feels like an extension of your arm.
