B-360 METAL PLOW PLANE. Gunmetal Phillips Patent. The plane invented by Russell Phillips in 1867 is one of the earliest and most dramatic in appearance of the metal plow planes. Before they were produced in cast iron by Babson and Repellier, Phillips produced a limited number in gunmetal under the name of The Phillips Plough Plane Co. of Boston. Four of these extraordinarily rare planes are known, each engraved in detail on the skate with the names of Phillips' company and the Metallic Compression Casting Co. Ownership of one of these planes is one of the holy grails of any collector of patented planes and it would be the centerpiece of any collection. This one is very clean, with the brass never polished and a couple of tiny chips from the rosewood tote, and it includes a set of 10 original cutters with the distinctive rod protruding from the side. The names of two prior owners have been stamped in the top rail (including the late Jock Moody). Simply a superb example of one of the most desirable planes in all of tool collecting. From the John and Janet Wells collection.Fine 15000-25000 NOTE: Absentee bidding ends 5:00pm EST on Friday, March 29, 2019.
