B66-56 TYPEWRITER. Hammond No. 12. James Hammond, a Civil War telegrapher, patented his typewriter design in 1880; it used a hammer that struck the paper from behind to press it into the type shuttle to produce a more even image. He produced a number of different models that were very successful; the No. 12, with its large celluloid name plate, was introduced in 1905.
