B65-488 PARAFFIN GAS LAMP. A.C. Wells & Co. No. 13. 9" diameter cast iron chamber reservoir mounted on a tripod stand, 32" tall in total, with a pipe attached to a burner coming off the bottom. There's a threaded hole in the top to fill it with paraffin (kerosene), closed off with a modern water pipe plug. It has "Wells' Paraffin Gas Lamp" and "Safety from Explosion" around the word "Patent", along with Wells' name and the model number, cast into the surface. This would have been used to illuminate outdoor construction sites and in similar locations. Wells' advertised that it would burn for five hours for a penny an hour, "without smoke or smell." Wells was founded in Manchester, England, in the 1880s and made a wide range of gas and oil lamps; it so dominated the market that these were known simply as "Wells Lights." Good+ 200-400
