B65-483 DRAFTING TOOL Kimber Cleaver Protractor. Most examples of Cleaver's protractor are square, with an inner divided circle with fine vernier adjustment and four spring-loaded marking pins (see Lot 475); this is an unusual variation that we haven't seen before in which the brass circle, 5" in diameter, has a rotating arm with a square arm at the end. Cleaver was a preeminent mining engineer in the Pennsylvania coal region who is credited with a number of inventions and innovations, but apparently held no patents. Like most, it was made by the Philadelphia firm of Wm. J. Young. In immaculate condition and stored in an old mahogany Macnudo cigar box. From the collection of Chuck Morgan. Fine 800-1600
