B65-373 RATCHET BRACE. Porter Patent. Henry Porter's 1857 patent represents the first American patent for a ratcheting brace. The iron shaft running through the center that operates the ratchet mechanism is removable for use as a regular brace. Pictured in the Art of Fine Tools, the brace is believed to be unique and, since its original discovery by Ron Pearson, has been sold by Brown's twice and has achieved near legendary status. Most recently, it was the centerpiece of the collection of Jim Schoenky. Probably the rarest American brace known. Fine 8000-16000
