B65-281 ADJUSTABLE COFFIN PLANE. J. Katz Patent. Patented in 1870 by Julius Katz of Cincinnati. The patent describes a method of gluing strips of "bone, ivory, or similar hard organic substance" together to make the sole, but the sole of this example is made of two pieces of lignum vitae with the rear piece dovetailed to the body and the front sliding to adjust the throat. 6-1/4" long and identical to the one shown in PTAMPIA II, Figure 162 - we think it's the same plane but can't prove it. Rare and possibly unique. Mild wear and staining. From the collection of Cliff Sapienza. Good 200-400
