B65-263 PORTABLE PLAIN COMPASS. J.H. Temple. 3" needle, silvered dial with fleur-de-lis at north and "J.H. Temple, Maker, Boston" at south. Folding sights and crossed levels. In original leather pouch with belt loops and side pocket for the Jacob's staff mount. John Temple was born in rural Massachusetts in 1812 and left the farm at 18 to apprentice himself to Nathan Chamberlain; about 100 instruments by him are known, mostly transits and levels. He is notable for having invented his own dividing engine. The first compass by him we have seen, and a very uncommon form. From the collection of Chuck Morgan. Fine 400-800
