B65-204 IVORY NUT SCREW-ARM PLOW PLANE. Barton & Smith. Solid boxwood and unhandled. Besides the solid ivory nuts, it has four turned ivory tips and ivory diamond shapes inlaid into the wedge and both shoulders. There's no mark on the toe, but there's a German silver plaque with "Manufactured by Barton & Smith" engraved on it. Original cutter with "D.R. Barton" and "Wm. P. Smith" stamped on it. Wood is near fine with only a few chips to the threads, there's one large chip from the inside front tip and some checks in the nuts but the ivory is otherwise very clean. Metal is plated with it mostly worn off on the depth gauge nut. Barton & Smith was one of David Barton's numerous partnerships that was in business in Rochester in the 1840s. The plaque, and ivory decoration, indicate that this was probably intended as a display piece. A very special plow. From the collection of David Jeffers. Good+ 3000-6000
