B65-64 COMBINATION BEVEL. Thompson Patent. Patented 10/12/58 by Meriwether Thompson of St. Joseph, MO, who went on to become a Confederate general known as the "Swamp Fox." One of the earliest patented bevels, with brass protractor head and lavishly covered with detailed scales used to lay out various complex angles. It went through several types; this is the earliest before a window was added to the handle. Besides Thompson's name, it is also marked by Wm. Conaway, a sawmaker who may have been the manufacturer, Chas. A. Miller as "sole agent", and L.E. Yorke & Co. as "Proprietors" who may have done the printing. There are a couple of chips to the edge and some overall wear, but all markings still legible, and no major damage. From the collection of Steve Dice. Good+ 200-400
