B-250 SURVEYOR'S COMPASS. William J. Young. The dial is bronzed with a silver ring, and is engraved "Wm J. Young, Maker, Philadelphia, Patent." The reference is apparently to Young's 1832 patent which included a darkened dial which was supposed to be easier to read. It has a 6-1/2" steel needle with lifting circle and a tally counter on the north arm. There is a circular level on the south arm, which Young also used in preference to crossed levels, like most it is dry. Includes a dial cover and in an original box with sighting vanes and a piece broken out of the end.Fine 400-700 NOTE: Absentee bidding ends 5:00pm EST on Friday, March 29, 2019. Live auction is at Camp Hill Radisson, 9:00am, March 30, 2019, Camp Hill, PA.
